RetisML: A Byzantine Fault Tolerant Protocol for Decentralized Machine Learning Research Distribution

Abstract

We present RetisML, a Byzantine fault tolerant protocol for decentralized distribution and preservation of machine learning research artifacts. Our protocol combines a modified BitTorrent implementation with a novel Byzantine agreement mechanism to ensure verifiable data availability, reproducibility, and integrity. The protocol introduces formal verification mechanisms for research artifacts, standardized metadata schemas, and an initial volunteer-based network that will evolve into a rewarded system. We prove that RetisML achieves safety and liveness under partial synchrony, tolerating up to ⅓ Byzantine nodes, and demonstrate through rigorous security analysis and empirical evaluation that RetisML achieves reliable distribution with strong guarantees for data integrity and accessibility.

1. Introduction

Contemporary machine learning research faces critical challenges in artifact distribution and preservation that impede scientific progress and reproducibility:

Storage and Bandwidth Requirements: Large-scale models and datasets exceed centralized infrastructure capabilities, with many models now reaching hundreds of gigabytes or even terabytes in size.
